Banksy: a pioneer or an imitator?

March 21st, 2012 · No Comments

To most, Banksy is one of the UK’s most innovative and active of all our artists. Over the last two decades, Banksy’s often controversial and politically-motivated artworks and stunts have popped up all around the world, from the Middle East to North America. But whilst his work is instantly recognisable, some people question whether Banksy is an imitator, not an innovator.

Ever since Banksy became a famous artist, many critics have been quick to call him an imitator of another French graffiti artist, Blek le Rat (born Xavier Prou). Initially, both artists expressed mutual respect for each other, with Blek le Rat saying that he doesn’t think Banksy copies him at the same time as Banksy admitted to being inspired by a number of artists, not just le Rat.

It is undeniable that both Banksy and le Rat are a part of the same Gorilla Art movement. Both their style and the way they exhibition their work in very public spaces are similar, but does this necessarily mean that Banksy has copied le Rat?

But is Banksy an imitator? Most art experts would agree that no; he’s not. Although there are some clear similarities between the two artists’ styles and their motivations (both use their artwork to reflect their and oppressed groups’ political and social opinions), Banksy’s portfolio is much more diverse (and also arguably more impressive) and therefore 100% reflective of his own uniqueness.

But despite their previous admiration for each other, more recently le Rat has hit out against Banksy by claiming that he’s angry his work is so similar to that of his own. Not only did Banksy have to defend himself against le Rat, but also against Channel 4 who filmed a documentary entitled Graffiti Wars, which claimed there was a bitter and malicious rivalry between him and another London-based graffiti artist, King Robbo.
